Gloomy Dunes

Gloomy Dunes

My girlfriend, Roxy, and I decided to get away and head to the Sand Dunes in Southern Colorado today. Last week at this time the weather forecast seemed to point to overall good weather but as today came closer it was looking more and more unsettled. Figuring it was going to be rainy up in Denver anyway we decided to risk it and head down. We planned to only camp one night and if the weather became too bad we would’ve just found a motel in Alamosa.

After stopping at a little diner in Ft. Garland we eventually made it to the park. The clouds were increasing to the West but to our surprise the strong winds were actually coming from the East. Wishing it wasn’t windy at least the wind didn’t bring any of the sand along since it lies to the West. After grabbing one of the last camp sites we decided to hurry and get the tent situated before it rained. It was a good thing too because about 30mins. after finishing, it started to get cold, windy and wet. Later on in the evening the storm abated just long enough for us to get a toasty fire going. But as midnight approached the winds returned along with heavy rains.

2-day/1-night trip total: 526.6 miles & 8:30:00 hrs of driving
