Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain

My uncle and I decided to climb out of bed early and go for a hike up Stone Mountain. We tried to leave a little bit early so we could escape the traffic but it still took more than a hour to get there. Once we finally arrived at the parking lot I was amazed at just how huge it is! Its unique because its primarily flat all around and then this thing just juts straight up 800ft!

My uncle and I quickly made it up to the top in about 25mins and the view from the top was spectacular! I’m glad we went early in the day as the temperatures were rising fast and there was barely any clouds to be seen. After walking around the top for a bit I was surprised to see flora similar to that in Colorado. Prickly Pear Cacti, a Yucca (probably wide as compared to narrow leaf), and pine trees that looked similar to the Ponderosa Pine. We soon walked back down and went to where they have a huge relief carving into the side of the stone.

The carving has Confederate Generals Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Confederate president Jefferson Davis. I was surprised to learn from my uncle that the modern KKK had its beginning here in the early 20th century. And yet today there are more minorities here than non….a very interesting place for sure!
