Fort Union National Monument, Dilia – NM
Yesterday my family decided to head to Carlsbad, NM for a couple of days to visit the caverns. My plan was to leave at 4:30am and meet up with them in Carlsbad. While driving down there I saw a sign for Fort Union National Monument just north of Las Vegas, NM. Seeing that I had time I took a slight detour to visit the park. I’ve never even heard of the monument and was surprised to spot the ruins from more than a mile away. The fort is relatively well preserved considering the buildings are well over 100yrs old and were mainly made out of adobe. After walking the long trail I hopped back in my Jeep and continued driving south. I stopped a few more times on my way to Carlsbad but only took photos in Dilia, NM. Dilia is located along the historic Route 66 and has some wonderful old buildings within the town.
Day One Trip info: 610miles, 10 hrs. 30min. of driving.
